At first when I started on the web about 6 years ago I mainly used free hosting. I had a few insignificant sites with no significant content. Let's just say I was 14 at the time. Free hosting was suiting me fine. It was advertising supported, with big URLs. Most of the free host I used disappeared in the first year. Today's free web hosting providers are less likely to disappear, and some offer sub domain as URL or the use of your own domain name.

Let's look at two different free web hosting provider.

Number 1
http://www.doteasy.com/
They don't deserve a live link; it's free if you buy the domain which is 25$. Very expensive for a domain name!

Number 2
http://www.50megs.com/
Banner supported. It's owned by Netzero so it will probably never disappear.

We have there the 2 main kind of free hosting you can find. The not so free one with expensive domain name and the ad supported one which is trying to make money out of your site. Hosting a website with the restriction they give is virtually free for them. Some have file size restriction or bandwidth restriction. A server can hold so many of those free sites is not even funny.

If you are serious about the web and your little place in it, don't go with free hosting. Save the 25$ for quality hosting fees.

If you want to visit large amounts of free host check out this well done directory. It's easy to find exactly what you need. They give a lot of information on 80 different free hosting providers.
